On this day in 1981, a truly great man became President of the United States. To celebrate, here are a few videos.
This was Reagan’s coming-out political moment, his speech on behalf of Goldwater in 1964, which includes the great line about the “soup kitchen of the welfare state.”
And here’s a clip from his inauguration, where he says something that most Republicans forgot.
Here’s his famous “tear down this wall” speech in Germany.
Here’s a heartwarming video about Reagan’s use of humor.
And, speaking of humor, here are his famous lines from his 1980 debate with Carter and his 1984 debate with Mondale.
Let’s close with Reagan’s incredibly moving D-Day speech about the “boys of Pointe du Hoc.”
October 2015 Update: I can’t resist adding this video because it perfectly captures Reagan’s wisdom.
Captures the spirit of these cartoons, I think you’ll agree.

Thanks for pulling these together, Daniel. Excellent.
A poll showed that THE AMERICAN PEOPLE considered conservative politician Reagan “greatest american ever”. Probably mainstream Academia and Media -so often obsessed with their sadistic/aristocratic goal of giving even more oppressive power & control to the political class- would rate Reagan bad. It is amazing that in major european socialist tax hells polls also found conservative politicians being considered their best men ever: Churchill was “greatest brit ever”, De Gaulle “greatest frenchman ever” and Adenauer “greatest German ever” (!!).
I think this agrees with the fact that it is the aristocratic-sadistic political class that is socialist and not the people; when the people has a decent amount of power to limit the power of the political class -like in Switzerland and the USA- the people rejects socialism. See how Switzerland and the USA are often demonized as being “capitalistic tax havens” in the usually socialist/aristocratic mainstream media and academia.
In my humble opinion Calvin Coolidge was the greatest president in the 20th century, but interventionism by republicans plus Hayek very bad theories, that saw LOOSE money where there was VERY TIGHT money, did enormous harm to Coolidge -and to classical liberalism and classical economics-. TIGHT money too almost obliterated Reagan presidency, but they corrected those mistakes and Supply Side Economics survived.
LOOSE money is bad, but seeing LOOSE money where there is VERY TIGHT MONEY is even worse, and that was Hayek colossal error. Here http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/198495/robert-mundell-financial-crisis/sean-rushton Robert Mundell criticizes LOOSE money but he explains how TIGHT money caused the 2008 crisis, made worse by the housing bubble.
Reagan was a big spender in the military, conservatives allege that the increased US military power brought the collapse of the Soviet Union (USSR). But what brought the collapse of the USSR was the fact that USSR stalinist leadership was replaced by a leadership of decent people like Mijail Gorbachov. That decent Gorbachov leadership, in order to curb the mass murders and atrocities necessary to sustain a stalinist regime, reduced their own power so much that the murderous stalinist USSR system collapsed.
Eventough Cuba can be destroyed a 1000 times by american military might Cuba stalinnist leadership for decades has remained stalinnist (it is changing now). Stalinists never decrease the power of their murderous/sadistic regimes to the point of collapse, which is what the Gorbachov ledership did This simple fact shows that it was the decent non-stalinist URSS leadership -and not big spender Reagan- that brought the fall of the USSR
