In a previous post, I gave Governor Mitch Daniels of Indiana a verbal kick in the shins because the rumored-to-be presidential candidate said nice things about a value-added tax.
While the VAT is a despicable idea, I don’t want anybody to think I harbor a special animosity for Governor Daniels. I am very skeptical of all politicians.
So let’s kick someone else in the shins, and we’ll make Newt Gingrich today’s target. I’ve actually known Newt since 1978, when I was a weekend volunteer for his first winning campaign while a student at the University of Georgia. And I think Newt was a superb Minority Leader for the GOP and he deserves considerable credit for dethroning the Democrats in 1994.
But that doesn’t mean he would be a good President, particularly when (to my knowledge) has not recanted this nauseating commercial he made with Nancy Pelosi.
I agree with Newt Gingrich on some things. The problem is some of the baggage he is carrying.

Indeed, I now see how my descendants 4 generations from now, who in most likelihood will have a life expectancy of 120+ years (assuming they do not completely unravel the aging process itself, in which case who knows ho long they will live) and be 5-10 times richer than I am (in real terms) surrounded by unimaginable technological capabilities, will have to be inconvenienced by the 2C temperature increase, which, I, the poor, short lived, technologically limited, ancestor stuck them with. Pity them!
Considering that, were it not for the fact that national debt will hit me and my immediate children within a mere couple of decades, I guess I would not feel so bad sticking my globally warmed far descendants with the enormous debt we seem to be accumulating.
But, for Americans and their standard of living, it is all a mute point. Other momentous events will take place, well before we even get to the next 1C rise in world temperature. At current trends, America will fade into worldwide economic averagedom well before we see even the next 0.5C temperature rise (and that’s assuming the science coming from IPCC is real), well before the average Chinese manages to produce just 50% of what the average American does. 3+ billion people are growing at breakneck speeds and we are wondering whether we should stop, smell the roses, and enjoy the view of wind turbines and solar panels producing energy at 10 times the cost of fossil fuels. Our plan and hope to remain the most prosperous country on earth: “Our central planning will be better than theirs (and 200+ other countries in the world)”. The epitome of American naiveté.
One thing is guaranteed: Our descendants 4 generations from now will surely be laughing at us – unless some WMD war (no, not climate change) wipes them out. The possibility of human armed conflict dwarfs any imaginable overblown environmental catastrophe in terms of its ability to extinguish life forms, especially ours.
In a word..No.
He, as I see him,is the typical NeoCon big government authoritarianism Keysian that the GOP is now known for.
nancy was at least newt’s second mistake. He proved that he couldn’t be trusted when he was married to his first wife.
He was creative politically, but, I believe his “sitdown” with nancy was his attempt at triangulation.
