The Mayor of Stockholm gave some brief remarks at the closing dinner of the Mont Pelerin Society meeting and mentioned that the number of students in private schools had skyrocketed after the implementation of Sweden’s school choice program. Intrigued, I emailed the folks at one of the nation’s research organizations to ask for some details.
The figures are impressive. The number of students attending private high schools has jumped from 1.7 percent in 1992 to 19.5 percent in 2008. Not surprisingly, the quality of education is high. Indeed, researchers have looked at the data and concluded that, “Our findings support the hypothesis that school results in public schools improve due to competition.”

Dan, how was the income tax cut movement in Sweden? Bjorn T.Wahlberg and his group succeeded in having a 50% top rate, later it went up to around 62%. Many parents will not be able to send their children to private schools and pay high school fees, if their take home pay is small due to high personal income tax.
In the Philippines, most middle class and upper class parents send their children to private schools, from pre-school to university. Private schools are very responsive to parents’ needs. There is also a wide variety of education “specialties” in elementary and secondary schools.
Of course the State still insist in taking as much taxes from us as it says that education is “government responsibility and not parental responsibility”.
