Some ideas are so horrible that I’m almost at a loss for words. The United Nations is a grotesquely wasteful and corrupt international bureaucracy with a long track record of failure and incompetence.
Yet some people think this collection of looters, moochers, and kleptocrats should have authority over the Internet. I’m not kidding. Here are some of the details from an Australian newspaper.
The United Nations is considering whether to set up an inter-governmental working group to harmonise global efforts by policy makers to regulate the internet. Establishment of such a group has the backing of several countries, spearheaded by Brazil. At a meeting in New York on Wednesday, representatives from Brazil called for an international body made up of Government representatives that would to attempt to create global standards for policing the internet… India, South Africa, China and Saudi Arabia appeared to favour a new possible over-arching inter-government body. However, Australia, US, UK, Belgium and Canada and attending business and community representatives argued there were risks in forming yet another working group that might isolate itself from the industry, community users and the general public.
For what it’s worth, this proposal is so crazy that it appears that even the Obama Administration is opposed. I certainly hope so, because this proposal inevitably would lead to many bad results, including restrictions on freedom of speech.
“The Court of Justice of the European Union Limits Free Speech”
by Judith Bergman • November 8, 2019 at 5:00 am
“This judgment has major implications for online freedom of expression around the world…. The ruling also means that a court in one EU member state will be able to order the removal of social media posts in other countries, even if they are not considered unlawful there. This would set a dangerous precedent where the courts of one country can control what internet users in another country can see. This could be open to abuse, particularly by regimes with weak human rights records.” — Thomas Hughes

“In early July, France’s National Assembly adopted a draft bill designed to curtail online hate speech. The draft bill gives social media platforms 24 hours to remove “hateful content” or risk fines of up to 4% percent of their global revenue. The bill has gone to the French Senate and could become law after parliament’s summer recess. If it does, France will be the second country in Europe after Germany to pass a law that directly makes a social media company censor its users on behalf of the state.”

the degree of censorship in the EU frightening… the same speech restrictions that are being imposed on Europeans there will be coming to a media outlet near you… be prepared to have law enforcement knock on your door if you post politically incorrect “hate” speech in the comments section of “International Liberty”… some of those comments can result in jail time…………………
that could be what happened to Zorba…

it seems things are getting worse… corporate fatwas?
for discussion…
internet censorship is alive and well… but it largely being done by private internet companies… this presents a real dilemma… private companies can do as they please… (just as a bakeshop owner should be able to refuse business that he/she is not physically or emotionally equipped to do…) some years ago the FCC in the U.S. imposed on broadcasters the FAIRNESS DOCTRINE … it was a federal policy mandating that television and radio stations present contrasting viewpoints on controversial issues of public importance… time to bring it back… only this time require that internet service providers and commercial satellite services adhere to it’s provisions… any service using the PUBLIC AIRWAYS to distribute it’s product or service should be included in the new FAIRNESS DOCTRINE …

Seriously?
Anybody who still thinks the U.N. should do anything other than go away should be executed for criminal stupidity.
Nobody wants to take the opinion of the Australian government seriously when it comes to the internet. You think the UN is incompetent? That’s nothing compared to these computer-illiterate morons.
Only a few years ago we were treated to government “information” mailed to every household, (at what cost I don’t even want to think about), that informed us in pitifully unsavvy language about the “dangers of the internet” – or at least the internet from 1992! Did you know there are things called viruses? And a new thing called, “e-mail” that people can send you from Nigeria?
I don’t know if the saying, “don’t try to teach your grandmother to suck eggs”, is used in the US, but this is exactly the opposite situation. You have a bunch of cronies who barely know how to use and ATM, let alone turn a computer on, trying to tell this generation there’s bad stuff on the internet. Give me a break.
Their claims about the, “dangers of the internet”, are misinformed and obviously motivated by a fear of something THEY don’t even understand. It seems their information comes directly from the ludicrous, post-news current a-scare … I mean … current affair programmes down here.
I heard some guy got killed by the internet. We need a law. Pfft!
So here’s my advice to these boobs, from someone who does know what they’re talking about:
1. If you’ve never seen a meme called, “Technologically Impaired Duck”, search it on Google Image.
2. If you don’t know how to do that, it applies to you. Get the assistance of the nearest 12 year old.
3. When you see that they do apply to you, or they do so much you don’t even get the jokes, it’s time to realise that you have an entire generation laughing their arses off whenever you try to give them advice.
4. STFU, (and if you don’t know what that means see step 2).
