I don’t know whether to laugh or cry when I write about insanely stupid government policies. But I know I get more motivated to fight big government.
How can anyone want to give more money and power to politicians, for instance, after reading these comparisons of dumb government policy in the United States and United Kingdom? Or how can anyone think it’s a good idea to expand the public sector after reading these examples of bureaucratic incompetence?
But now I’ve come across something even more amazing, a story of government stupidity that trumps these other examples. And this is not satire. It is not from The Onion.
Believe it or not, the Greek government has decided that pedophiles are “disabled” and therefore deserve money from the government.
And what really makes this boondoggle remarkable is that you’re helping to pay for it thanks to the IMF bailout of Greece. Here’s the link to the AP story, and here are the relevant passages.
…a government decision to expand a list of state-recognized disability categories to include pedophiles, exhibitionists and kleptomaniacs. …The Labor Ministry said categories added to the expanded list – that also includes pyromaniacs, compulsive gamblers, fetishists and sadomasochists – were included for purposes of medical assessment and used as a gauge for allocating financial assistance. …The new list gives pyromaniacs and pedophiles disability pay up to 35 percent.
Maybe I’m just old fashioned, but my first reaction to this story is that child molesters should be in jail, not getting taxpayer-funded handouts.
I guess that’s being unfair, though, since not all pedophiles become child molesters.
But that’s besides the point. Why on earth did the government decide that pedophiles are disabled? And why does that automatically entitle them to disability payments?
Most important, why did the Obama Administration support the IMF bailout of Greece, which means I’m helping to pay for this nonsense?!?
I don’t know whether this is a sign that I’m not very imaginative or a sign that I have an overly active imagination, but the only semi-rational justification I can think of for this policy is as follows.
1. Greece is in fiscal trouble in part because of too many overpaid bureaucrats.
2. It’s almost impossible in most circumstances to fire bureaucrats.
3. By some miracle, though, pedophiles don’t have normal levels of civil service protection, which means they can be let go.
4. But government unions don’t want their fellow bureaucrats cut loose without some sort of golden parachute.
5. So Greece rules these pedophiles are disabled and gives them a permanent source of income.
6. Greece then saves money by paying them 35 percent of their salaries to stay home and goof off rather than paying them 100 percent of their salaries to come to the office and goof off.
Sounds crazy, and I’m sure this isn’t what’s really happening, but can anyone think of another explanation?
Whatever the reason, this story is the perfect symbol of bloated, stupid, and feckless government. The only example that comes close, though it only applies to one person rather than an entire class of people, is the decision by Social Security bureaucrats in America to give disability payments to some clown that wants to be an “adult baby” and wear diapers.

I think I would alter daddyduck’s punishment somewhat. I would set up a large pile-driver and a heavy duty conveyor belt, made of heavy razor-edged metal grating. Line them all up, start that 12 ton piston going, and set them on their way…sort of like a giant French fry cutter. Quick, painless (except the anticipation), sort of like a fly swatter hitting a bug. And the meat scraps that come down the chute? THAT’S where the gasoline and matches come in…

The actual answer to your question is that the Greek government, among virtually all others, is secretly advised by Psychiatrists, who establish made-up “disorders”, applied to people who then get medical “help” by being drugged with heavy psychiatric drugs at enormous expense. The labels are the key. The politicians are too stupid or too paid off to notice the insanity in this. – Bill

hehehe dobre dobre 🙂
It’s hard to find well-informed people on this topic, but you seem like you know what you’re talking about! Thanks
A homosexual is eight times more likely to molest a child then a hetrosexual. Should we execute them also?
Zina’s right; they should just execute the pedophiles.
I’m a monogamist. I’m pretty sure that makes me a minority these days and, possibly, the only sexual proclivity left that gets the tag of “pervert.” Can I get disability now?
Greece has moral problems and not money problems! I believe in grace but I don’t like giving people money who might hurt kids.I also like what Daddyduck has to say.
Californian Stanley Thorton was featured in the National Geographic channel show Taboo, which details different sexual proclivities and paraphilias. Mr. Thorton happens to relish the idea of dressing and pretending to be an infant. To that end he has sought and received Social Security checks as having a disability, which have allowed him to pursue this avocation as a government supported lifestyle. He has invested quite a bit of effort in this regard, even seting up and maintaining a website that details all of his acitivities. This despite an inquiry as to its appropriatness as something that maybe shouldn’t be funded by the government by Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn. In its wisdom in perpetuating as much of the status quo as possible, the Social Security Adminsitration has assured Mr. Thorton that his lifestyle and the supporting check, are safe.
This week, Mr. Herman Cain, of whom I had been a fan, came out and stated that, in contrast to Congressman Ron Paul, who wants to drastically cut the massive spending and to trim the federal budget to what we can afford and to get rid of unconsitutional departments and agencies, that this would be “throwing the baby out with the bathwater.” Instead, Mr. Cain has proudly stated that his intent is a tax code revision that is “revenue neutral” with an ultimate stabilizing of taxes at 23% of GDP, up from our current 60 year average of 19.3%. Nothing about cutting the size of the federal government. Nothing about cutting the spending.
We have a national debt of 15 trillion dollars and unfunded liabilities of over 135 trillion dollars. We have almost 200 federal departments, agencies, programs, grants, bureaus, commisions, adminsitrations, offices, and foundations that are unconstitutional. These beaurocracies are not necessary for the federal government to carry out the 17 specific duties that the Constitution specifies as the only duties of the federal government. Without those, we would actually not only not need a 9-9-9 plan, we would not even need an income tax. And this without any impact on actual spending for defense. The duties of those departments are duties that the states have the option of enacting under the Consitution, if the people of those states choose to stay living there and pay the taxes to support them.
And Mr. Cain says that making efforts to cut down on those agencies is “throwing the baby out with the bathwater”. He is fine with the current activities of the federal government, but says instead that he and other businessmen, “like Mitt Romney “, need to reform the government to make the government more effective. A kinder, gentler Republican verson of the Democratic/Progressive government we already have.
I submit that the government we have is an adult baby, that insists on continuing to live in babyclothes and refuses to do useful work and is not interested in doing anything different such as growing up and living within its means. And now Mr. Cain, after multiple efforts to become a poitician, is within striking distance of being able to run the whole show, ostensibly as a conservative, but not as a little “r” republican. Instead he intends to remake the government over in his image, getting it running strong and smooth and not doing anything about the massive size or its encroachment on liberty and freedom.
He is conserving the status quo. “Republican” socialism instead of lib/prog socialism.
He has revealed himself as an adult baby government enabler.
Maybe I’m just old fashioned, but my first reaction to this story is that child molesters should be put in a hole, have gas poured on them, then matches thumped at them, not getting taxpayer-funded handouts. But that’s just me. If I could make the final decision. I would put all child molesters on live TV (primetime) and all day, and snatch their nutts and dicks off. Without anesthesia. But again, that’s just me.
… They believe in 6x world average western standard of living levels, in large part supported by someone else’s production…
Sorry iPhone.
To me the kleptomaniac inclusion is even more interesting.
A majority of voters would qualify as kleptomaniacs. They believe in the delusion of western level standard of livirom USDA Ned I large part by someone else’s production — and set their countries to 1-2% annual growth trendlines to swift decline.
Greece …..remember their motto … follow the Greek but dont let the Greek follow you!
I truly believe our Gov. officials have these problems and that’s why they support such stupid policies. Could it be the gay thing is being shoved on us by a gay commander-in-grief?????
Letting these people live is in itself a burden to society no matter how you turn it. They can be dangerous to others which makes them difficult to employ in any capacity, but if they haven’t committed a crime then jailing them isn’t the answer either. Putting them in institutions keeps them from contributing even a little, but the fact remains they live and have the same basic human needs that we all do, and without some sort of cash, in this world, what choices are there really? It costs thousands to lock them up either in jail or in an institution because you have facility and employees to run them, to factor in to the cost. So if you cant kill them, and nobody wants to employ them what is left? If you look at it, it is far less burdensome on the taxpayer who must foot the bill of their undesirables out of basic humanity. A thousand a month plus food stamp and even medicaid included, leaving them to carve out a meager life is far cheaper than paying an institution (more each year than your average middle class worker!!!) to house and feed and medicate them, and reduce the overcrowding of these institutions by doing so. We are all very good at complaining about the problem, though not so good at coming up with a solution, that is why it is in the laps of government to begin with.
Are you sure this is not one of those Onion fake stories? It surely sounds like one that fooled AP. But come to think of it, sometimes reality is stranger than parody.
What I’m seeing is that there are pedophiles in the government and the beaurocrats for whatever reason are protecting them instead of the victims. this is why America needs to stop funding to such places. It needs to stop.
Sadly folks in this country will more than likely not hear anything about this story and won’t be upset. Some who do hear about this will simply shrug it off as something that can not happen here in America not seeing the parallel paths that our countries are on in unstable spending and the cradle to grave care taking that goes on in this country by government.
