There’s an amusing ritual that takes place in Washington every time there’s a big debate about tax policy. A bunch of rich leftists will sign a letter or hold a press conference to announce that they should be paying higher taxes rather than lower taxes.
I’ve debated some of these people in the past, pointing out that they are “neurotic” and “guilt-ridden.”
But they apparently didn’t take my criticisms seriously and go into therapy, They’re now back and the Washington Post provides very favorable coverage to their latest exercise in masochism.
More than 400 American millionaires and billionaires are sending a letter to Congress this week urging Republican lawmakers not to cut their taxes. The wealthy Americans — including doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs and chief executives
— say the GOP is making a mistake by reducing taxes on the richest families… Instead of petitioning tax cuts for the wealthy, the letter tells Congress to raises taxes on rich people like them. …The letter was put together by Responsible Wealth, a group that advocates progressive causes. Signers include Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, fashion designer Eileen Fisher, billionaire hedge fund manager George Soros… Most of the signers of the letter come from California, New York and Massachusetts.
Earlier in the month, I would have told these “limousine liberals” not to worry because I was pessimistic about the chances of a tax bill getting enacted. But then the Senate GOP unveiled a better-than-expected plan and I’m now semi-hopeful that something will make its way through the process.
That doesn’t mean, however, that these rich leftists should be despondent.
Because I’m a nice guy, today’s column is going to let them know that they don’t have to accept a tax cut. The Treasury Department has a website that they can use to voluntarily send extra money to Washington. It’s called “gifts to reduce the public debt,” and people like George Soros can have their accountants and lawyers calculate the value of any tax cut and then use this form to send that amount of money to D.C.
And if these guilt-ridden rich people take my advice and send extra money to Washington, I surely won’t object if they want to give me a modest commission.
But I don’t think I’ll get any money for the simple reason that these wealthy statists already have been exposed for being hypocrites. When given the option to pay extra to Washington, they run for the hills. In other words, they talk the talk, but won’t walk the walk.
It’s the same at the state level. Massachusetts also gives people the option to pay more to government, yet Elizabeth Warren has never volunteered to cough up extra cash.
By the way, if there was a prize for the most economically illiterate comment in the article, it would go to Bob Crandall, who apparently doesn’t realize that the money he puts in a bank is then lent to entrepreneurs and others who then invest the funds.
“I have a big income. If my income gets bigger, I’m not going to invest more. I’ll just save more,” said Crandall, who is retired.
Remarkable. I’m at a loss for words.
And I can’t resist sharing one final blurb from the article.
Former labor secretary Robert Reich…also signed the letter.
Huh, how did he become eligible to sign? He certainly never contributed to growth in the private sector, and I’m not aware that he inherited a bunch of money. Well, upon closer inspection, it turns out that fretting about inequality is a good way of becoming part of the top-1 percent.
P.S. Germany also has guilt-ridden leftists who push for higher taxes.
P.P.S. It’s not just that rich leftists don’t pay extra tax. They also go out of their way to figure out how to pay lower taxes. Just look at the Clintons. And Warren Buffett. And John Kerry. Or any of the other rich leftists who want higher taxes for you and me while engaging in very aggressive tax avoidance.

I might point out that Johnson was the god-father of the modern welfare state… and his intention was to keep poor and lower-middle class people down on the democrat plantation by making them dependent on government programs… the tradition continues in the modern democrat party… leftists in charge of our large cities refuse to insist on results oriented education… the modern day equivalent of slave owners refusing to teach their slaves to read and write… in city after city poor Americans… particularly minorities… suffer from sub standard educations… “A recent study by Project Baltimore found that in 13 public high schools in the city there were zero students proficient in math. Zero. None.” in many other democrat controlled big-city schools students read and write at the at the primary school level… and yet teacher’s salaries are generally well over 50k… according to a Chicago Public Schools spokesperson the average pay for teachers in Chicago without benefits, is $76,000… and retiring after 30 years of service… $77,496… teachers are well paid… apparently… to keep the kids down on the plantation… and when young people graduate without the skill set to be successful adults? they look to government for subsistence… and in place of a stable family support structure… they turn to gangs… drug dealing and violence… over 600 homicides so far this year in Chicago… mostly poor minority Americans… but most of them will still vote for the democrat… when Johnson’s welfare programs passed… be bragged that poor Americans [he used another word] would be voting democrat for the next hundred years… he may have been right…
“low and moderate wage workers are no better than modern slaves.”
Who even thinks like that?”…………………………………………. democrats?

btw Blend, you should be ashamed of yourself for suggesting that I might believe that “low and moderate wage workers are no better than modern slaves.” Who even thinks like that? Embarrassing and disgusting.
Blend,
Where in that report does it show anything about the poor being over-taxed? Or even mention anyone’s tax burden? I don’t see anything.
If you want to look at the actual tax burden by income group, look at this report published by the Obama administration in 2016: https://www.cbo.gov/sites/default/files/114th-congress-2015-2016/reports/51361-householdincomefedtaxes.pdf
As the report shows, the bottom quintile of people with the lowest incomes have a negative 7% federal income tax rate. That’s the overall average effective tax rate. Which means they don’t pay taxes and even receive a net refund. Is that over-taxed?
But that’s only income taxes. You apparently think that payroll taxes will balance things out and prove you right. Wrong. Including ALL federal taxes (income, payroll, corporate, and excise), the bottom quintile pays an effective tax rate of only 3%. With this broader view they actually do pay taxes, but certainly you don’t think 3% is over-taxed, do you? (FYI, the top 1% of income earners pay an effective tax rate of 34%.)
I think you are confused. The poor are not over-taxed. Their tax ‘burden’ is not what keeps them from building wealth. What keeps them from building wealth? They either (a) don’t work full-time, (b) don’t increase their incomes over time, or (c) don’t save any money. It’s not the tax code stopping them.
I have seen these pleas ‘Don’t cut my taxes’ before and I don’t understand them. Unless you won the lottery (and I would guess none of the signers to such documents would be lottery winners), then you must have done something productive to gather than much wealth and income. And if that is the case, there is a high likelihood that you created jobs and made some economic contribution to the nation.
So if you believe the above, it would be necessary for the signers to believe that their capital is better allocated by Mitch, Nancy and Co than it would be under their stewardship.
What could be further from the truth???
@JohnMichaelWagner “The poor are over-taxed?? What possible evidence do you have for that statement?” The rich save and invest their earnings with the help of many tax breaks. Their wealth grows in both absolute and relative terms.See Federal Reserve 2016 Survey of Consumer Finances https://t.co/HeeimsZCyK.
All reasonable educated people agree that the poor and middle class families need more savings and wealth for emergencies and retirement. The combination of taxes is too high to allow for savings over time. The upper middle class and the few with pensions manage OK. Of course if you believe low and moderate wage workers are no better than modern slaves, than no evidence will change your mind about job killing payroll taxes.
It only tells you those liberals get far more back in government contracts, favorable treatment for permits, regulation etc than they pay in taxes. Their worst fear is flat tax without deductions, subsidies etc.
The poor are over-taxed?? What possible evidence do you have for that statement? Based on all I know, that is a ridiculously false statement.
Perhaps the leftist rich guys are interested in restoring family wealth to 90% for business reasons. The share of family wealth has decreased to a 14.4% share – down 50% since 1989. Many customers are hurting and are no longer supporting certain businesses. Wedding and baby products are way down because only 26% of the poorer half are married. Florists and photographers must be hurting.
The decline in wealth share caused by overtaxing the poor cannot continue indefinitely. It has already passed a healthy equilibrium of wealth distribution. Family formation is in jeopardy. At least the wealthy who are not earning 8% or 10% in profits on their net wealth should be taxed at top rates. The better stewards will give back.
I know it’s real popular to bash billionaires, but many of them do a lot of good with whatever wealth isn’t taxed away. Like stopping malaria or building libraries and museums. They pay higher taxes, they create jobs and promote productivity and innovation, they typically capture only 2-10% (rough) of the total economic value they create for society, then many of them apply their wealth philanthropically. I cannot understand the rage and hate for these people. OK, they’re not saints. Who is?
Talk is easy. It’s action that tells the real story.
I’ll pay more if everyone else pays more? It is similar to saying I’ll save people from drowning only if they save others from drowning? I am not aware of any ethical standard in any culture that echoes this ethical model.
