I posted a horrifying story last week about a Lithuanian immigrant who was mooching off British taxpayers.
She basically had a very comfortable life thanks to beleaguered taxpayers, and I compared her to a Greek woman who thought the state owed her everything.
But there’s no ethnic requirement to be a bum. I’ve also shared stories about American moochers and Austrian moochers.
I’ve even shared stories about terrorists getting welfare handouts in Australia and France!
So I hope my British friends won’t be upset that I’m now going to highlight a couple of English deadbeats.
Here are some odious details from the UK-based Sun.
Danny Creamer, 21, and Gina Allan, 18, spend each day watching their 47in flatscreen TV and smoking 40 cigarettes between them in their comfy two-bedroom flat. It is all funded by the taxpayer, yet the couple say they deserve sympathy because they are “trapped”.
Does this mean they are imprisoned? Is someone holding them at gunpoint?
Hardly. It simply means that these two scroungers get such lavish handouts that their living standards would fall if they actually lived decent and honorable lives and went to work.
The couple, who have a four-month-old daughter Tullulah-Rose, say they can’t go out to work as they could not survive on less than their £1,473-a-month benefits. The pair left school with no qualifications, and say there is no point looking for jobs because they will never be able to earn as much as they get in handouts. Gina admits: “We could easily get a job but why would we want to work — we would be worse off.” Danny’s father, 46, even offered him a job with his bowling alley servicing company — but could not pay him enough.
So how much are these moochers stealing from taxpayers? Quite a lot, particularly if you keep in mind that £1 is equal to $1.57.
The couple, who live in Hants, receive £340 a week, made up of £150 housing benefit, £60 child tax credit, £20 child benefit and £110 in Job Seeker’s Allowance. They pay just £25 towards their spacious £625-a-month home. Their lounge is dominated by the huge TV and a leather sofa. …They spend the same on tobacco as they do on their daughter’s milk and nappies.
Gee, isn’t that nice. Taxpayers are even financing their cigarettes.
I blame Danny and Gina for being a couple of bums, but I also blame British politicians for creating a lavish welfare state that enables this awful behavior.
It’s not that people are trapped in poverty, but they definitely are lured into dependency.
By the way, the same problem exists in the United States. Indeed, this chart shows that the plethora of freebies from taxpayers means a household can be better off with $29,000 of income rather than $69,000 of income.
No wonder the poverty rate stopped falling once the so-called War on Poverty began.
For more information, here’s a short debate I had about the topic, and here’s a video explaining how the welfare state is bad for both poor people and taxpayers.

Damn chavs spoil everything….
“Don’t hate the player, hate the game” Government makes this happen through their soul-crushing welfare programs. I don’t blame people for acting irresponsibly, Government condones and enables this behavior.
“It is all funded by the taxpayer,” wrote someone at the Sun, “yet the couple say they deserve sympathy because they are ‘trapped’.”
“Does this mean they are imprisoned?”, Dan asked rhetorically. “Is someone holding them at gunpoint?”
Well, these questions may have answers in Dan’s own essay, “A Picture of How Redistribution Programs TRAP the Less Fortunate in Lives of Dependency”.
fraud against another
=============
But that is exactly what they are doing. They are defrauding other peoples labor.
James, get your facts straight, these “moochers” don’t engage in illegal plunder – the money is given to them legally by the state, there is no fraud or coercion on their part. You might well make a different choice, bravo, but this is precisely my point – *requiring* people to act “morally” and “selflessly” is fundamentally the *antithesis* of classical liberalism, which states that people should be free to act as they choose providing it does not involve violence or fraud against another. This is what I mean by “disrepute” – sloppy thinking passing itself off as classical liberalism.
Here’s another reminder: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rls8H6MktrA#t=3m10s
Oh Jeremy, this is rich: “But vilifying individuals for acting in a way *entirely consistent with basic economics* is not only unhelpful, it brings classical liberalism into disrepute.” These rough remarks bring centuries of thought and tradition into “disrepute.” My goodness! After taking to the fainting couch, would you mount the same argument for those that might choose to steal your property directly? It is “basic economics” to just take what you need without paying, being the lowest cost option for the taker and all. Going on the dole is a choice, especially if one is not truly needy. That the coercive power of the state is used to separate folks from their money for you to take it, makes you no less of a moocher, or even a beneficiary of theft.

There is one additional thing that Danny and Gina get, which their American counterparts don’t get (but are about to get–and that is when the true unfolding of American prosperity starts) : Free (i.e. paid by others) healthcare, an $15k per year value for those who count. So Danny and Gina’s compensation for indolence is much higher than the reported figure.
When a developed world level of medicine, developed world level of education, and modest housing is unconditionally provided, then, for most people, the non pecuniary enjoyment of virtually unlimited free time, tramples the effort of making a living inside four office walls, even if your income was going to double ( which means your pre-tax earnings have to triple or quadruple since you will now have to pay into all this HopNChange).
Much is said about tax disincentives to production on the most competent. Virtually nothing is said about the indolence inviting policies if insulating the less competent from the consequence of mediocrity. There’s an obvious reason for the asymmetry: Who wants, or who can afford, to insult the majority that elects them. This is why the suicidal decline of western world voter-lemmings is irreversible. In hardly a generation’s time, their decline will conclude, and they will still be in denial about its root cause.
So is it any wonder why Britain, France, Germany, Sweeden etc. are all, have been, and will be on a one to two percent growth trendline, thus relentlessly losing three to four percent a year of their international prosperity standing in a world that is growing by five percent? Eventually, even the level of those unconditionally guaranteed freebies (healthcare, education, housing) will no longer be developed world level. For the western world voter-lemming, the mood will get ever more somber. My fear is that western world voter-lemmings will act so suicidally in their imposition of collective economic management and democratic totalitarianism that even dictatorships with modest reason will be able to overtake them. That will be a very unfortunate outcome for liberty, though in the end, few will escape and the Darwinian natural selection of cultures based on efficiency, productivity and thus growth will continue. That I’m confident about, but interesting times await. Especially for the delusional and suicidal less than one billion voter-lemmings of the western world.
Why do you blame them for being “bums”? What kind of classical liberal are you anyway? Milton Friedman himself would tell you that they are merely acting in their own self-interest, as anyone else would – as homo economicus!
Would YOU take a big pay cut to do a job that you liked less than your current one just because some people disapproved of your lifestyle?
Yes, the welfare state is broken, and yes, we probably need to see specific examples of it as well as statistics. But vilifying individuals for acting in a way *entirely consistent with basic economics* is not only unhelpful, it brings classical liberalism into disrepute.

These bums have a four-month-old bum kid and they’re too selfish to leave it alone while they work all day for less money than they claim in benefits? Kill them! Excellent work trying to divide the working classes, keep it up! These bums will be voting against their own interests in no time!
