I did a video several years ago on the link between big government and big corruption, and I periodically revisit the issue by citing disgusting examples of sleaze and cronyism ranging from the Export-Import Bank to the racial spoils scam in Alaska.
The folks at Learn Liberty also have a great video on this topic, explaining how big government creates all sorts of unfair and corrupt advantages for politically connected large corporations.
Amen. Whether we’re talking about TARP bailouts, our loophole-ridden 72,000-page tax code, Obamacare favoritism, or green-energy scams, it seems like the federal government is a giant favor factory.
So why, then, are some people in favor of big government. Is it naiveté or are they part of the racket?
In any event, I highly recommend some other Learn Liberty videos.
- What’s better, free trade or protectionism?
- How government subsidies increase the cost of higher education.
- Is Obamacare constitutional?
- Examining how excessive federal spending is America’s real fiscal problem.
I especially like the last video since it echoes many of the points I made in my video series on the economics of fiscal policy.

SF, what’s truly comical (or sad) about your explanation is that many liberals claim to hate corporations and favor smaller businesses; yet their favored policies actually hurt those same small businesses while giving the corporations a huge advantage.
A great example of this is the recent tax scamming that GE has been using to reduce and/or eliminate their tax burden. Of course, their CEO is BFF with Obama!
Another great example is how liberals claim that corporations are evil, greedy organizations that all commit crimes and need to be taxed into submissions. Have you ever noticed that almost every liberal has either an iPhone or iPad made by one of the most profitable (IE, greedy!) corporations in human history?
And, of course, liberals hate monopolies but the largest monopoly in our country is the federal government! But the government can be trusted, not those evil corporations!
An excellent video. I’d like to add my own definition/version:
Crony Capitalism (a.k.a. Fascism) Noun –
An immoral economic system that results when Govt intentionally overregulates, taxes, and suppresses non-favored business enterprises, pushing them to the point of extinction; meanwhile subsidizing & supporting its big business cronies. Govt also passes legislation favoring its business allies giving them an exclusive & unfair advantage over their smaller competitors, which in turn drives the disfavored entities bankrupt. This diabolical scheme results in everyone having fewer choices in the marketplace, which forces consumers into buying inferior products at much higher prices from the remaining govt supported businesses.
