Yes, local governments are at least as corrupt, and often less professional, than the Washington crowd. But I can stop in at the Mayor’s office on my lunch hour and ask questions, push my positions, and even rant and rave if needed. I can’t do that with Washington.
The local corrupt functionary at least has me in his face – and therefore is preferable to one 1000 miles away.

Amen…it is human nature for one to be a bit more cautious of doing evil deeds when you have to face your victims and look them in the eye. That is the basis behind federalism and the goal of forcing governmental control, where necessary, down to the lowest level…national governments operate with comparative impunity, e.g. the caesars, Hitler, Stalin. Our founding fathers were smart enoungh to recognize this, hence the Tenth Amendment (which sadly is ignored by our courts today).

There are, of course, always examples of abuse, but the removal of sub-standard, public nuisance structures can be done legally and properly and be a good service to the community. In the jurisdiction where I work we do tear down nuisance structures, which are rodent infested or occupied by vagrants or used for criminal activities, but the owner is always afforded due process through public hearings with the Board of Supervisors. We always give the owner the opportunity to cleanup the property first, and only proceed with demolition if the owner refuses.
